Last House on the Left Review

The original 1972 Last House on the Left has long been regarded as one of the most confronting films ever released. The film was banned in Australia up until 2003 and until recently, I didn't really want to watch it. Having since watched it, I personally found the original version is over-rated, its very camp and so badly acted that you can't take anything seriously. It was a joke and I think its a big joke that it managed to be banned for so long.

The story sounds lame on paper, however, after watching the original film I could see that the story had lots of potential if explored correctly and now we have the remake. Remakes usually suck with of course the very rare exception. The problem I find with most remakes is that they are remaking a film which doesn't need to be remade, like The Grudge or Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Last House on the Left was one film that really needed to be remade, but not some half-ass attempt, and thankfully Rogue Pictures have pulled out the goods and brought out a confronting and disturbing thriller which is one of the rare highlights of the genre.

The first key area this film got right was the cast. The cast in the original were all pornstars and as you would expect, their acting was terrible. Garret Dillahunt brings a scary sadistic menance to the role of Krug, the head baddie. You can tell he doesn't take shit from nobody and he will more then likely slaughter you the first chance he gets. He is a very frightening to watch. Sara Paxton clearly has a heap of skill and she, for me, was the films highlight. Not having seen her in anything before, I figured she was just another Disney kid with very little acting capabilities, but she really surprised me. Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn are great as Paxton's parents. The rest of the cast also handle themselves well.

Where the great acting really plays a part is in the rape scene which made the first film so famous. Here they have shortened it and cut a few bits out from the original, I always found the original's scene to be quite lame with bad acting, it didn't feel like a movie, it felt more like a reanactment that you would see on the news. The director has made this movie much darker and his actors do an excellant job of making this scene disturbing as shit. I personally had to watch it on mute because Sara Paxton's acting was first-rate. Its not an enjoyable scene, but the film-making is top notch.

Rogue Pictures went through well over 100 directors before settling on Dennis Iliadis. I haven't seen Iliadis' previous film, but the film was apparently so well received with the studio that they signed him right away. He shows that he has a lot of skill, creating scenes you would expect from a film veteran. The car crash for example is one of the best filmed I've seen in recent memory, it is a dark and brutal scene that suites the film perfectly and the angles used in the scene are fantastic. He also manages to build a lot of tension. The film is unusual because the tension has to given off of the killers and not the victims, as is usually the case, which requires a different kind of film-making. Iliadis does this perfectly and the final product is a very intense picture.

The film doesn't slip into the un-needed brutality of pictures like Hostel and Saw. Violence isn't dwelled on, its a quick cut and its just confronting enough to disturb but not too confronting that all tension is lost or make you ill. Its a near perfect balance and even the silly last scene of the movie is forgiven because it follows the same pattern of all the other violence in the movie.

Whilst many people will be completely put off by this movie, I however recommend everybody see it. The film is so realistic and so depressing that it will shock even the most hardened viewer to their core. It will make you think for days on end and its a film you will never forget. Sometimes films challenge their viewers and this is one film that is a challenge, you will not enjoy sitting through it, but thats the whole point. This film is brilliant, near perfect.

The movie tells the story of LA's top celebrity shrink who is unable to cope with a recent personal tragedy and turns into a pothead with no concern for his appearance and a creeping sense of his inability to help his patients. Adventureland Review

Early this week I did a review for Angels & Demons, in it I explained how sometimes seeing a movie with no expectations can be a blessing and hype can be a bad thing. This week I saw Adventureland, I have wanted to see this movie for the good part of a year. I hyped myself for this release for so long that I started to doubt that I would actually enjoy this movie. Thankfully I have fell in love with a film for the first time in years.

I'm a big sucker when it comes to the quirky, sweet, funny and sad indie comedies. However over the last view years I haven't been able to find any that reach the heights of some of my favourites like Garden State, Elizabethtown or High Fidelity. Adventureland has now joined my upper tier elite, the films I watch hundreds of times and love every single time I watch them. These are films that make me happy on a sad day and give me hope when I need it. They are not perfect movies by a long shot, but they are films I adore.

Adventureland is partially based on the life of it's writer and director Greg Mottola. It tells the story of a recent college grad, James, who can't afford to live it up in Europe and then New York because he's parents finanicial woes. Now James finds himself stuck in a dead-end job in he's hometown, trying to save money so he can support himself, but he finds it is more then just job and finds that it preparing him to live in the real world.

The film succeeds in its writing, and whilst the acting is great, it's the foundations in the writing that make the characters so lovable and so easy to relate to. Every character feels like somebody you know. They are all good people, but they do silly things in a moment of frustration or crisis. You feel for each and every character, and you will find yourself getting embarrassed when a character does something dumb and it's of Mottola's great writing that we relate to these characters.

Working from the great script is a decent bunch of young actors. Jesse Eisenberg stars as James, and in my mind he is the only weak spot in the casting. He does a solid job, but at times he is wooden or you feel like he doesn't get into the character as much as the other actors do. But this can be put down to the fact he is young and to be honest he doesn't do a bad job at all. Kristen Stewart continues on her winning ways. Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig add some comedy to the production. Martin Starr is Haverchuck all over again and was extremely funny to watch. The highlight of the film would have to be Ryan Reynolds, he completely played out of he's usual range and did a fantastic job of making the auidence feel sympathtic for a character with such a trouble and sordid life.

The main thing that may annoy auidences is the lack of comedy. I found that the movie wasn't funny in general, but if you related to the characters then you found things to laugh at. My friends that I saw it with both walked out with the same opinions as me, and all 3 of us found ourselves giggling at different points during the movie, however, very few other people would be laughing. The film is very character driven and because of this the comedy isn't handed up on a plate, its not given to you, you actually have to watch and work to get the comedy out of the movie. This is a very common trait amongst indie cinema.

Many other reviewers have said that Adventureland is one of the best coming of age stories to be released in quite a few years. I very much agree with this, it is a brilliant movie. Greg Mottola did a fantastic job of bringing he's extremely well written script to the screen and I absolutely loved this movie. If you loved Garden State, then you will love Adventureland, I guarantee it!

How to Train Your Dragon - March 26th, 2010 - Written and directed by Chris Sanders and Den DeBlois. Voices includes Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera and Johan Hill. Set in the world of Vikings and dragons, it centers on an awkward teen who befriends an injured dragon.

Shrek Forever After - May 21st, 2010 - Previously titled Shrek Goes Fourth. Directed by Mike Mitchell. The further adventures of the giant green ogre, Shrek, living in the land of Far, Far Away.

Oobermind - November 5th, 2010 - Previously titled Master Mind. Directed by Tom McGrath. A satirical take on superhero movies, in which a notorious villain loses his oomph after he accidentally kills his nemesis Metro Man. Voice talent includes Robert Downey Jr. and Tina Fey.

Kung Fu Panda: The Kaboom of Doom - June 3rd, 2011 - Previously titled Kung Fu Panda 2. Longtime story executive Jennifer Yuh Nelson makes her feature directorial debut with this. The continuing adventures of Po, the Kung Fu panda. Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman will reprise their roles.

The Guardians - November 4th, 2011 - Based on a not-yet-published book series from author William Joyce, whose work has previously inspired Disney's Meet the Robinsons. Jeff Lynch is attached to direct the film, which unites characters every child knows - Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Jack Frost and the Sandman - to defend the world from a Bogeyman-like villain.

Puss in Boots - March 30th, 2012 - Shrek the Third helmer Chris Miller will direct. Imagines the events before the character's appearance in Shrek 2, while introducing all-new characters. Antonio Banderas returns as Puss and Salma Hayek will lend her voice to love interest Kitty.

Madagascar 3 - May 27th, 2012 - Madagascar helmer Eric Darnell will direct. The story in this will relocate the four friends from Africa to Europe via a traveling circus.

Katzenberg will choose just one of the following three projects for its November of 2012 release slot.

The Croods - Directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco. Previously an Aardman Animations collaboration known as Crood Awakening. A comedy set in the Stone Age about a caveman named Crood whose status in the village is threatened by the arrival of a prehistoric genius who comes up with revolutionary new inventions.

Truckers - Derived from the first book in Terry Pratchett's The Bromeliad Trilogy. Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy is adapting. A story about the Nomes, a race of tiny people from another world who now struggle to survive hidden amongst humans in a department store.

Super Secret Ghost Project - Not much known about this project, except that it will "ask what ghosts think about humans." Sounds a bit like Monsters Inc. maybe?

"Paul" Gets Amazing Cast!

Everybody loves Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The boys are back, not finishing their "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy" but they have written the script for this sci-fi comedy. They even star in this film, simply titled Paul, which tells of 2 brits travelling across America to get to Comic-Con.

The film is a fucking win, but the cast gets even better! Seth Rogen will be providing his voice to an alien, whilst other Apatow regulars like Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Jane Lynch have also signed on. If you thought this alone sounds like a dream movie with a dream cast, then it gets better (is that possible I hear you say!). Jason Bateman is also on board! I love Bateman, he is one of the best supporting actors on the planet, and he is also fucking hilarious.

But, thats not all folks. Greg Mottola, that sexy lil bald budda that made Superbad and Adventureland is at the helm, making sure that this will be one the greatest comedies ever. Take my word on it, this movie is going to insane.

Last year it was leaked that Jonah Hill walked out on Transformers 2 so he could write and produce a 21 Jump Street movie. Now some talk on the project is starting to come through and I am getting very intrigued. Hill had this to say...

"[Sony execs said] they were gonna let me make my kind of movie—an R-rated, insane, Bad-Boys-meets-John Hughes-type movie—and I told them the second they don't, I'm not gonna be involved anymore."

I'm on board with anything Hill does, I think he is a talent and I'm getting hyped for this movie. No filming dates or a release have been annouced but I'm sure some better news will pop up in the coming months.

Angels & Demons Review

Sometimes I just love seeing a movie I have no expectations for. Often on occassions I will see a movie that I have hyped up in my mind and I end up walking out of the cinema a very disappointed person. When it came to Angels & Demons I had absolutely no expectations. I figured it would be an alright way to blow a couple of hours on a boring Tuesday night. I was left quite surprised, as I got quite the thrill ride and I walked out of the cinema thinking "wow that was 150 minutes!".

To put it quite bluntly, The Da Vinci Code was a terrible movie, well from what I can remember of it anyway. I should probably watch it again now, but I have this distinct memory of not enjoying it at all. Because of the reception the first film received, Angels & Demons was always going to be a tough film to make. Firstly its budget got slashed and then the writers strike stopped production. When production did get under-way, it had to stopped halfway through because Ron Howard contractually had to make Frost/Nixon. The book on which this film is no where near as big as Da Vinci Code, and it has always lived in its shadow despite having the better story. Angels & Demons was always going to have a hard time of finding both an auidence and fans.

Thankfully Howard, Koepp, Goldsman and Hanks have pulled out the goods and Angels & Demons is a cracking thriller that moves at a non-stop, break neck speed. The pace of the film can be described as fast. It takes about 5 minutes and then its all go. Hanks' Langdon has about 5 hours to track down an old evil, stop 4 Cardinal's from being murdered and stop Vatican City being destroyed by light. The film runs at 138 minutes in length, but you will walk out swearing it was only 60 minutes long. The film moves with more pace and energy then an episode of 24.

As well as being extremely well paced, the film is quite tense. I have read many reviews compare it to National Treasure, but that just isn't so. The film lacks the humour of those movies and is purely a thriller. Many may find that the film gets off to such a fast pace that you don't have time to build tension, but I disagree, I like a film that is willing to make your palms sweat from the very beginning and keep that pressure through-out the whole movie. Angels & Demons does this. It kept my heart racing for its entire length, and I loved it.

The acting is better in this movie when compared to the first. Hanks seems more settled in the role, in the first movie I personally felt like he wasn't quite taking it seriously, but here Hanks seems committed to the task at hand. Unknown actress Ayelet Zurer is a much better leading lady then Audrey Tautou was in the first, not that she is a bad actress, just the role didn't work for her. Also good to see Armin Mueller-Stahl getting back into acting, he continues on with he's great work from Eastern Promises and The International. Ewan McGregor is the only casting let-down, he's accent is enough to drive anybody bat shit crazy. I read that he's character in the book was Italian, perhaps they should have cast an Italian actor who would be better suited to the role.

This film won't be great for everybody, many people won't enjoy it. I went into the screening with absolutely no expectations, and thats why I highly enjoyed the movie. I doubt that if I watched the movie again that I would have as much praise for it, because to be honest, the story at times is a little silly, but the film doesn't try to be anything other then a really thrilling and tense adventure and it succeeds at being so. In my mind this film is a winner.

Night at the Museum 2 Tops US Box Office

Its very slow news wise at the current time, the US has a public holiday today and we have one this coming weekend, so expect news from there and here to be slow this week and next week.

In a surprising turn of events, Night at the Museum 2 has taken #1 spot on top of the US box office. The surprise is the fact that many predicted Terminator 4 would open well in front of NATM2, but it didn't and Stiller and his crazy bunch of historical figures opened to a very impressive $53.5 million, about $23 million more then the first movie made in its opening weekend.

Terminator 4 opened a day before Museum, so its final figure stands at around $56.4 million, however over the actual weekend, Museum pretty much destroyed Bale/McG and their Terminator re-boot by almost $10 million. Many expect the film to have an opening of well above $75 million, many even saying it would be the biggest film of the year, sadly this wasn't the case. I personally put this down to the average advertising and the lack of an R-rating, which showed fans and movie followers that Warner Bros. didn't have much faith in the movie. I will be seeing it when it gets released in Australia on June 4th.

Star Trek continued on it's winning pace. It made $21.9 million in its third movie and will soon surpass Monsters vs. Aliens as the biggest movie of the year. Angels & Demons also held well and made $21.4 in its second weekend and should pass the $100 million mark next weekend.

Universal Forcing Tarantino to Edit Basterds

Fuck you Universal. A big fuck you. It seems Tarantino has gotten into bed with a bunch of money hungry basterds. Despite the fact the film is co-financed by both Tarantino's usual team the Weinsteins and new partner Universal, Universal have come out and told Tarantino to make edits to the film which screened at Cannes earlier this week because they weren't happy with the response.

The film that screened was 148 minutes long, which is a length most big studios avoid because long movies don't make money. Seems Universal have pulled the same bullshit with Basterds and have asked Tarantino to "trim" the film.

Seems the best film of the year will get arsed fucked by consumerism.

Night at the Museum 2 Review

When I saw Night at the Museum a few years back, I was left very disappointed. They got a great cast of some of the best comedic actors ever, they had a massive budget and a really good idea, but sadly something just didn't work and I was not a happy person in regards to the final product.

Now we have Night at the Museum 2. No matter how I felt about the first, I was willing to forget all because Amy Adams was on board. I will watch and worship Miss Adams stars in. Thankfully for us, not only did she bring her "A" game, but so did all the recurring characters and the new additions, making this a fantastic sequel.

The film gets off to a slow pace. Its set a few years after the first and shows that Larry has become rich and now runs his own company. He visits the museum from time to time because he misses his plastic mates, but when he goes to visit this time we see that all his mates are getting shipped to the Smithsonian, the biggest museum in the US. Here starts another big adventure that gets hailed as "The Battle for the Smithsonian".

Lots of sequels have bombed in the past because they have added in too many new characters to the mix. This is one of the reasons why both X-Men 3 and Wolverine fell flat. However this film benefits from the massive cast and massive mixture of characters. Its the Smithsonian for Christ sakes, they have everything! Even Darth Vadar makes an apperance. The extra characters are what makes this movie so enjoyable, Jonah Hill's security guard is hilarious, you will find it hard to laugh at the 3 Angels and the Einstein dolls are just great.

The cast do very well and its clear they are having a ball. Wilson and Coogan are an unusual team, but they work so well together. Stiller, whilst I have always found him to be quite a wet and boring lead actor, does his best to add charm and warmth to the production. Amy Adams is the star here. She has this strange skill to bring a small to your face just by looking at her. Her Amelia Earhart is full of bubbly charm and its because of Adams that Stiller is turned from a cold fish into a much more likable character. Over-acting is sadly also present. Hank Azaria is annoying, really annoying and you just want to smack him.

I commend the film on its effects and action. It never becomes a big action or effects movie. They are understated and never try to over-shadow the comedy or the characters, which is great because they are such an important part to the movie, but you just don't notice them like you usually would with a movie because they are never in your face. Great work from the effects team for their work.

Although I have said many nice things about the movie, it isn't without its faults. It's not hilariously funny, whilst there are moments where you do laugh, it doesn't remain consistant and they repeat jokes or keep them going for far to long. But you can look past all of this because the film is so fun and so light-hearted that its really hard not to jump onboard and enjoy the role.

Braff is Back!

Call me biast, but Zach Braff is a legend. He made Garden State, easily my favourite film ever made, not to be confused with the best film ever made. Now he is back, writing, directing and starring in Swingles.

The story is about a bachelor who is dropped by his wingman and teams up with a quick-witted woman he can't stand in order to meet singles. Cameron Diaz has signed onto the film and will star opposite Braff in the lead role.

I know it sounds cliche, but I really don't give a fuck. I am a massive Braff fan and I will probably camp out just to see this in cinemas! More news as I hear it.

Casting News

I'm being incredibly lazy! Instead of doing heaps of posts with different casting news, I just thought I would lump it into one post. That would also save me having to find pictures for each new post.

Probably the biggest news is that Sam Raimi is not keen on Kirsten Dunst returning for Spider-Man 4. Fan boys rejoice? Nothing is 100% confirmed yet, but as Dunst's career is officially in the crapper, this would be another blow to her and could be the end of everything.

Star of Gossip Girl Chace Crawford is replacing Zac Efron in the remake of Footloose. I like this casting cause it means I definately don't have to see it. Where as Efron can actually act and can probably dance too, Crawford is one of the most annoying people I have ever seen on screen.

Mandrake finally has its leads, Hayden Christianson and Djimon Hounsou have joined the cast. Now I like the sound of this project, so I will be updating this more and more as news comes rolling in. I believe there is some promo shit around the net for it, so I will track some of it down and post it up for you.

Funny People seems to be coming along nicely, we have gone months without any news or word on the project and then all of a sudden in one week we get a Funny People overload. It was annouced that rapper Eminem has filmed a cameo role in the film. I hope its a stand-up routine, cause he actually is quite a funny person.

There is heaps more casting news, but this is main news floating around at the moment.

Early Inglourious Basterds Reviews

The Basterds premiered at Cannes yesterday and some early reviews are already circulating the net. The good news is that its getting some ripper reviews, the bad news is that its getting some terrible reviews. No middle reviews here, seems like you'll either love this film or hate it.

One thing I've noticed across all reviews though is that the acting is first rate, best of any Tarantino film yet and that quite surprisingly enough, Eli Roth is the highlight! First Showings went on to say "he knocked his role out of the park", of course pun was intended (his character kills Nazi's with baseball bats).

Angels & Demons Brings in the Monies

Although no where near as epic as the opening weekend of Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons brough in $46.2 million in the US and a further $104 million internationally, covering its budget in one weekend. The opening weekend for A&D is being hailed a win for Sony after many suspected the film to flop hard!

Continuing along on its merry way, Star Trek had a tiny (tiny for a big movie) drop of only 42% to bring in a very impressive $43 million second weekend. It will soon pass Wolverine and looks set on its way to becoming the biggest film of the year. Star Trek is standing at $147 million after 10 days of release.

DLB Writing and Directing!

DLB = Dustin Lance Black. The man wrote a fantastic, under-appreciated movie called Milk and now the man-boy (he looks 12!) is taking a seat behind the camera and directing his own script called What's Wrong With Virginia.

Simply put, Milk was one of the best films I've ever seen. Full stop. It was just brilliant, all round brilliance, the kind of brilliance you don't see from a film very often. Whilst the film was a team effort, DLB had a massive hand in the film cause he wrote it and he scored himself an Oscar. Yay. It's this love for Milk that has me orgasming at the sound of this. Neesom going dark! Yeh it's sad his wife died, but I'm hoping he can bring that off-screen tragedy to this role which I suspect will be a dark one. Jennifer Connelly will be playing Neesom's lover, and the film revolves around their relationship and the boundaries its pushed to when their children become involved with each other.

The film will start filming in the coming months and a release of mid-next year can be expected.

Funny People TV Spot

Patrick Lussier Talks My Bloody Sequel

Although a sequel to My Bloody Valentine was canned by Lionsgate just a few weeks back, it seems they may have reversed their decisions. JoBlo's sister site Arrow in the Head managed to get this out of Patrick Lussier, director of My Bloody Valentine.

"The sequel that we wanted to do is a stronger story than the original. Even though you know who the killer is, it has twists and turns that you don’t expect, even knowing who the killer is. There is a whole, kind of, getting into his mythology of how he became what he became. And then using that, you discover that… there are things that are eluded to in the first one that you don’t have all the answers for. Particularly with the killer going to psychiatric institute and how did he get let out of that facility."

I wasn't a massive fan of My Bloody Valentine, but it did have cool moments, so if they can improve upon it then I am game for it.

Chris Hemsworth is Thor

I hate Chris Hemsworth, however us Aussie's have this strange urge to jump on the bandwagon for any of our stars that make it in Hollywood. Sam Worthington is getting his own acting career and now Hemworth will follow, becoming Thor in the adaptation of Marvel comic Thor.

Kevin McKidd has been the favourite for a long time and I would much rather him, I honestly thought that with Kenneth Branagh directing that McKidd would get the job, but I guess not.

The film is currently is pre-production and filming starts in January next year.

Observe and Report Review

Hollywood has always seemed to think that as long as you have a great, well built character, then you can have the world's shittest script. Thanks to Jody Hill, we now know that this isn't true, in fact it couldn't be further from the truth.

Observe and Report was one of the most promising releases of the year. Seth Rogen would finally have to act and actually carry a film all by himself. Jody Hill was finally making a movie for the masses. Dark comedy was back and darker then ever. Michael Pena was breaking into the mainstream. Sadly, apart from a few bright moments and some great performances from Rogen and Pena, this film is pretty much one of the worst I've ever seen. Some of you may which to skip to the summary from here, I talk a lot of shit and the summary wonderfully wraps-up everything, however, if you like shit talk, then please continue.

So where does it fall ass up? For one, the story is terrible. Its a shame really, because sometimes the film is incredibly smart. Rogen's breakdown is quiet but so well played out by both actor and director. However the story that surrounds it all fails in comparision to what the film is trying to say. Its clear Hill is a man with smarts, but he crafted a story which is riddled with pointlessness. The flasher? The robber? Police academy? All pointless plot devices to try and make a comedy out of something that just isn't funny. You see if the film took a step back and tried to focus its comedy instead of being so scattershot then I would be a much happier viewer. Instead we get a great character and a great performance that gets lost in "skits".

The film chronicles the mental breakdown of Rogen's bi-polar mall cop. It is a quiet performance from Rogen, he builds a character which you shouldn't like, but you like Ronnie because you know his just fucked in the head. He is a mess and his mental breakdown is smart and clever from Rogen/Hill, only a smart viewer will pick it up. Many will only watch because of its comedy aspects, but the only ones who will enjoy it are the ones smart enough to look past it all to find the heart. However, the comedy is so in your face, offensive and bland that you don't give a shit. Having 2 characters yell fuck you at one another for a minute isn't funny. Its not real comedy, its not smart comedy, its almost like the comedy is just there to get an auidence in so Hill can push his agenda onto an unsuspecting and unwilling auidence.

I could complain about this film for weeks. In fact I probably will. This film has a disgraceful amount of cons. Its not funny is its first fault. Hill's agenda is the films second fault. Terrible scripting and lack of a real story is the third. Anna Faris' shocking performance is fourth. I could go on. In the end, if you love Seth Rogen and want to see him actually act, then this is the film to see. He gives this film some heart and his performance is one of quite brilliance. Not interested in Rogen? Don't see the movie. You won't laugh, cause nothing is funny.

In Cinemas This Week

This week is a bit slower then last weeks. Well slower as I'm not interested in the weeks biggest release, Angels & Demons. Now whilst it looks like an improvement upon Da Vinci Code, I have been flooded with the trailer now enough times that I have no wish or energy to even consider seeing it. Advertising is good, too much is bad and Sony have proved this point for me with the over-advertising of Angels & Demons. However, if you don't go to the cinemas weekly then your probably safe and this is probably a film your considering seeing.

Seth Rogen newy Observe and Report has my interest however. Although it looks like a change of pass for the rising star, with its dark under-tones, the film should come out hilarious. I will have a review up for you later this evening. For those that don't know it, it tells the story of a bipolar mall cop who must protect the one he loves from a serial flasher. Crazy!

The kiddies are not forgotton this week amongst all the murder, conspiracy and flashing. They get those fucktards the Jonas Brothers in a 3D concert experience. Lame, but I'm sure if you have children that like listening to music that would make most peoples ears bleed, then they will want to be seeing this. I believe it is only showing in limited release, so check your guides to see where it is at.

One film I really want to check it is Gomorrah. Its getting great reviews and topped many top 10 lists last year. It will be playing in super limited to release, but fingers crossed it is showing in my area so I can give you my thoughts on it this weekend.

Who Will Direct Conan?

It's a war between the studio and studio! This is why 2 different teams should never get together on a film. After Brett Ratner dropped from the race to direct the new Conan remake, Nu Image/Millennium has set its eyes on V for Vendetta helmer James McTeigue, whilst Lionsgate has no faith in McTeigue's skill, they want Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th), Christophe Gans (Silent Hill) or Neil Marshall (The Descent).

If reports are to be believed, Nispel is the front-runner for the job and whilst I think he is a director with potential but is yet to find his gear or unleash his true skill, I don't think he is the one that should direct it. Friday the 13th lacked heart and Pathfinder, similar to Conan, was just terrible. If he can make Conan with the same passion he made the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, then perhaps he is the right choice.

I love McTeigue, but would rather see he do more important films then a Conan remake. Same goes for Marshall, who I absolutely adore, his films are brilliant! This leaves Gans and I think he is a wise choice. Silent Hill was visceral and visual outstanding and he would fit Conan like a glove. However, I'm neither studio, so I get no say. Hopefully a final annoucement will be made in the forthcoming weeks.

Star Trek Only Does "Solid" Overseas

Yesterday I reported that Star Trek has done some fantastic business in the States, but sadly the film has failed to connect with an overseas market, only bringing $35.5 million from 54 countries. I'm not likely to have the top 10 for the weekend overseas until the end of the week, if at all.

In the US, Star Trek actually made a further $3 million on what yesterday's estimate was. Brining its total for 4 says in release $79.2 million.

Call of Duty Movie?

For those that have played any of the Call of Duty games you will know what a gaming experience it is! Now it seems that the famous and critically acclaimed gaming series will be making its way to the big screen. In a recent interview, in which Activision was meant to be talking about its Guitar Hero tv series, they let slip that a World of Warcraft and Call of Duty video games are in development for the big screen.

Whilst many gaming fans will be up in arms about the decision, I am for it. I personally have been waiting for a great video game movie for the last 10 years and whilst the BioShock will likely be this movie, just in case its good to know Call of Duty is also being developed.

Star Trek Commands Box Office

After securing $31 million on from Thursday and Friday, Star Trek continued to prosper as it pulled in a further $45 million over Saturday and Sunday to finish the weekend with a total of $76 million, of course $4 million of this was from early screenings on Thursday and $3 from midnight screenings, only the midnight screenings count towards the actual weekend gross. Confusing I know, but whilst the film has $76 million, it only made $72 over the weekend. Adjusting for inflation, Star Trek still boots the ass of every other Trek movie!

Star Trek also took the biggest opening weekend ever from IMAX screens. It pulled in an estimated $8.3 million from the 138 IMAX screens across America. The Dark Knight set the previous benchmark with $6.3 last season.

A more detailed report will be up tomorrow when actual figures are released. Below are the estimates.

Star Trek Love

WOW the news is quiet today! So quiet in fact that I am posting this as news. As well as getting rave reviews, Star Trek also seems to be striking gold amongst fans. When I was checking it out yesterday, Star Trek has an 8.2 average on IMDb, this morning the film has gone up to 8.6 average and now sits at #82 on the top 250 of all-time. Quite a nice effort I must say.

This also goes along with critics opinions, Rotten Tomatoes has Star Trek down as a 96% average amongst critics. Looks like we have a new action sci-fi classic. Well done to J.J. Abrams and all others involved.

Star Trek Opens Big!

Having put a cool $7 million in the kitty on Thursday night screening's alone in the US, Star Trek added a further $24 million on Friday, bringing its 2 day total to a very nice $31 million. In its opening 2 days (or 31 hours), Star Trek has already bested the opening of any other Star Trek movie.

The studio stated earlier in the weekend that they would be very pleased with an opening weekend of $50 million, with 2 days and still 2 to go, it looks like Star Trek will finish with a total close to $70 million. An absolutely fantastic effort!

The rest of the weekend's box office isn't so pretty. Wolverine looks to stumble 65% to around $25 million. The film took a weak $9.1 million on Friday. Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past seems to be holding much better and should enjoy a small decrease in %.

Other opener Next Day Air has flopped, taking a lame $1.25 million on Friday and opening in fifth place. The film should finish the weekend on around $3.5.

The 5 Smaller Releases Not to be Missed this Season

Amongst all the big flashy blockbusters getting released this season, we also have a crop of smaller Hollywood flicks and festivals favourites that will see release. Whilst you may miss these because they are opening on weekends with bigger releases, these are 5 films that you should not miss when it comes to their release.

01. Drag Me to Hell

Whilst this will probably get a wider release then the other films on this list, I expect many to avoid this. On paper, I don't blame them, it has a soft rating, it stars Alison Lohman, its had a lack of advertising and the fact Sam Raimi has been corrupted by Hollywood and it's money. However, one look at the below trailer will quickly change your mind. It's clear that this will be a horror classic, no matter how much it makes at the box office. In the US, this has the unfortunate task of going up against the latest Pixar offering Up. I have no doubt in my mind that Drag Me to Hell will be the horror film of the year and will perhaps become a new benchmark in the genre.

02. The Hangover

Although this may seem like a formalic and cliche gross-out comedy (and it may be) this has one thing that I don't recall any previous film in this sub-genre ever having, it has lots of studio love. So much love in fact that a sequel has already been approved. This is usually a sign that this is gold. Many critics have suggested that this will be the surprise hit of the season, and whilst this may be true, I suspect this to get a smaller release then other films released around this peroid. Another reason I think this film should not be missed is because its pretty much the only comedy of its style being released for the good part of half a year, something very rare in Hollywood, so if you need that fix, this will be the film! Oh, did I mention it also looks hilarious?

03. (500) Days of Summer

I personally don't know a lot about this movie. Which scares me, because it stars 2 of my favourite actors and it was a massive hit at various festivals earlier this year, many a critics hailing it "the best of the year". We all know that this is a big call and perhaps to early in the year to say such things, but the trailer is absolute gold and the performances look all class. Its also the kind of quirky indie comedy that gets the Academy all hot and sweaty. This will play in limited release around the US in July, however, expect this to have heaps of word of mouth and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up getting a nation-wide release and re-release come next February.

04. Moon

In the year that sci-fi became cool again, this is the film that has the best chance of becoming a classic. Whilst Star Trek and District 9 will play nicely to mainstream sensibilities, those looking for something a bit darker, something with a little more bite will all be best to check out Moon. The trailer gets me wet. Perhaps to much info, but it does look fucking amazing. Rockwell has been arriving for the last 10 years, but has never found the right project to explode him onto the scene, this looks like it. The film will swing on his performance, its a one man show and his acting will make or break the film. Lucky for us he is getting more acclaim for him then I have seen anybody get in quite sometime. Australia has to wait until September, but the US get limited release in June.

05. Adam

I don't know what it is about this movie. It looks like every other quirky indie romantic comedy, but for some reason, and it could be cause I'm going all soft on the inside, the trailer for this film makes me smile. Hugh Dancy looks to put in an ace performance, and although sometimes you want to kick the poor man in the nuts, you can't help but feel like he will bring warmth and heart to his mentalling unstable character. Its also good to Rose Bryne going back to her indie roots and I hope she puts in a better performance then she did in Knowing. However, it could all turn ass up and be terrible, but I have faith that this will be a neat little film.

Darren Lynn Bousman Remaking Mother's Day

Twisted Pictures, the Genre Co. and Rat Entertainment have decided to move forward on a remake of 1980's cult classic Mother's Day. The original film told the story of two brothers who engage in murder and rape to impress their deranged mother. Now doesn't sound to promising, but the producers have compared the remake to The Strangers, which is one of my favourite horror movies from the last few years. Darren Lynn Bousman has been signed on to director the film. Bousman has directed Saw II-IV and cult favourite Repo! the Genetic Opera.

"We're taking the iconic image of a mother, the most comforting and nurturing person in the world, and perverting that into something that is punishing and sadistic" exec Richard Saperstein said.

Producers are looking at a blockbuster season release around July 2010. More news as I read it.
